Watching the beginning of Ingmar Bergman’s Cries and Whispers(Viskningar och rop, 1972) it’s possible to perceive (because of the clocks) superficial similarities to Paul Cox’s Golden Braid (1990). But immediately one is drawn into Sven Nykvist’s cinematography – well, OK, there’s also a production designer (Marik Vos-Lundh) – but I assume he (Nykvist) and Bergman worked out that colour scheme, and the red-outs, and whatever. I just wish (personally) that it wasn’t Harriet Andersson suffering: she’s too good at it. On the other hand, there is Liv Ullmann, forever ideally beautiful. It’s possible to see Kari Sylwan, as Anna, as the central character. Ingrid Thulin tries to steal the film, but it’s an ensemble piece. Her film is Ansiktet (The Face, 1958).
