Go to Blazes

I remember standing in Perth’s CBD when I was younger – apparently it was in 1962 – and, pointing to the cinema sign (shall I just give in and write ‘theater marquee’?) on the side of the street – Murray St, it would have been – and saying to a friend with me: ‘We could walk over there and go in and see a film with my famous cousin in it.’ Or something like that. But we didn’t, and it’s only now, nearly fifty years later, that I’ve acquired a copy on DVD of Go to Blazes (Michael Truman, 1962) with Robert Morley, Daniel Massey, Dennis Price, Maggie Smith and of course … Coral Browne.

After yet another smash-and-grab goes wrong, a bungling trio of small-time crooks flash an idea of using a fire engine as a getaway vehicle. But they keep being mistaken for genuine firemen and it starts to become a flaming nuisance.
