Golden Braid (Paul Cox, 1991) wr. Paul Cox, Barry Dickins; Chris Haywood, Gosia Dobrowolska, Paul Chubb, Norman Kaye; based on story by Guy de Maupassant, "La chevelure"; 88 min.
When a man discovers a golden braid hidden inside an antique he has purchased, he becomes obsessed with the fantasy of a love affair from time passed and the woman he imagines the braid belonged to.
Paul Cox was in love with Gosia Dobrowolska when had made this, and you can tell. Chris Haywood gives an uncharacteristically sensitive performance. Other stars of the show are the various clockwork devices. A fine art film made by a leading auteur.
Wikipedia page - in which Paul Cox is quoted as telling Peter Malone this is 'quite a funny film, but few people get it' - so I should see it again, because I didn't get it - tho the fact that Barry Dickins is a co-writer should be a clue.
