Heaven's Burning

Craig Lahiff, 1997, aka You Don't Know What Love Is; wr. Louis Nowra; Russell Crowe, Youki Kudoh; Japanese woman on honeymoon in Australia leaves her husband and becomes involved with Aussie bushwhacker in a chase across Australia; 99 min.

I'll never know whether Craig Lahiff might have intended the climax and conclusion to his film to be funny - but it certainly is OTT - over the top. As the end approaches, Rusty Crowe and Youki Kudoh are being pursued. She's driving because he's been shot, and is clearly going to die soon, whatever happens. And the music on the soundtrack, for minutes and minutes, is the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. Not much dialogue, just Wagner. And more Wagner. If you're at all familiar with the music, in this context, it's risible.
