Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger (Cathy Randall, 2008) Danielle Catanzariti, Cassandra Jinman, Talia Monaghan; coming-of-age Jewish comedy
Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueberger – yes, that is the name of a film – is the Jewish version of Looking for Alibrandi. Both girls are out of the ordinary (Jewish/Sicilian), both experience class conflict (‘private’ and public schools), both find a friend in the lower class, both are dorky and wear unflattering spectacles. I could prolly go on.
At 103 minutes, the film would benefit by a little nip, but overall it's a sweet encounter and one that is as unexpected as the film's title. Louise Keller, urban cinefile.
