No Through Road (Sam Barrett, 2008) James Helm, Megan Palinkas, George Shevtsov; WA
I had a brief look at Sam Barrett’s first feature, No Through Road. But when one of the characters, the one with the house, said for the tenth time, ‘I should call the police’, when it’s bleedingly obvious he should but he’s not going to and awful things are going to happen as a result … I couldn’t watch any more. Sorry Sam. Perhaps I’ll try again later, in a less logical and more cinematic mood.
The fact that director and writer Barrett is playing the thug who subjects Richard to improvised garage-tool torture even introduces a meta-critique of filmmaking. A representation of the cruel sports a director can put a cast through is something with which many actors might well sympathise. Paul Griffiths
