Talk to Me

Talk to Me (Danny Philippou & Michael Philippou, 2022) wr. Bill Hinzman, Daley Pearson; Sophie Wilde, Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen; horror; group of friends conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, unleashing supernatural forces

The reviewers below seem to think this horror flick is Anna Karenina. It's ... a horror film. I left it for a few days to write about it, and I've completely forgotten all about it. Why did it scoop the pool at the Australian Academy awards? I can only think it's because it has made a lot of money, not because it's art.

Peter Bradshaw:
If the Sex Pistols ever directed a version of The Monkey’s Paw, it might look like this: a chilling adventure under which there is, however, an undertow of pathos, its title an ironic twist on the emotional pain involved in not talking about your feelings. The Guardian.

Chuck Bowen:
The Philippous are blunt and pragmatic about how damaged people can perpetuate damage onto others, as their personal baggage warps their empathy and survival skills. Unfairly castigating herself for an atrocity, Mia perpetuates atrocity in turn and runs the risk of divorcing herself from society. The metaphoric dimension of the demons evolves as Talk to Me progresses: They initially connote drugs and social media influences, and later resemble the internal demons that we carry with us, and that can drive us to unexpected breaking points. Slant.
