This is a collection of seventeen unrelated short films being marketed as if it were one feature film. All that the shorts have in common is that Tim Winton wrote the short stories on which the scripts were based. It was nominated for seven awards at the 2014 AACTA Awards. Rose Byrne won the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, despite the fact that the film she appears in lasts for only about ten minutes. This is the first time since 1973 that an actress has won this award for an appearance in a short film.
Eight of the seventeen films were broadcast (in a different order) on the ABC on Sunday 23 February 2014 (although under the title of The Turning) demonstrating conclusively that this is not one film but a collection.
Omnibus films often feel like the cinematic equivalent of a meal of cocktail hors d'oeuvres; one of the achievements of The Turning is how well-crafted, cohesive and satisfying it is as a film. Despite its sprawling ambition and daunting runtime, it's surprisingly light on its feet—engaging, entertaining and frequently mesmerising throughout, with only a few missteps along the way.
