All That Jazz

All That Jazz (Bob Fosse, 1979)

In the same way that I assumed (wrongly) that an American comedy (Waiting for Guffman) would be funny, I thought that an American musical film (All That Jazz) would be entertaining – as in amusing and mildly uplifting. Wrong again. Words to apply to Bob Fosse may include ‘bitter’ and ‘twisted’.

Director/choreographer Bob Fosse tells his own life story as he details the sordid life of Joe Gideon, a womanizing, drug-using dancer.

Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange, Leland Palmer
