I bought a copy of The Border (Tony Richardson, 1982) because Ry Cooder did the music – tho, as it turns out there’s very little of it. However, it was very timely seeing it again (tho it’s set in Texas) as SB1070 is about to come into force in Arizona on 29 July [2010]. This is a law that will allow enforcement agencies to put illegal immigrants in jail instead of merely moving them on. They will need a great deal of prison accommodation: there are reckoned to be about eleven million such people in the United States. (I don’t recommend the film, by the way, despite the presence of the reliable Jack Nicholson: it’s simultaneously depressing and soppy.)
