Les choses de la vie (Claude Sautet, 1970) Michel Piccoli

The film tells us from the beginning that the man is going to die in a car accident, so we see the last period of his life in that knowledge. Also we hear his thoughts as he's dying, and there's a coda to complete the story. (The ex-wife destroys the letter to the mistress.)

The crash itself is done in great detail, and is very effective for the time. (Wikipedia: The car crash scene was shot on a crossroads specifically created for the purpose, and took two weeks to shoot.) Piccoli must have been very uncomfortable. Negative: everyone smokes cigarettes constantly. Positive: Romy Schneider.
