The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (David Fincher, 2008) Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt [Benjamin Button ages backwards.]

Fortunately it was early when I put The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (David Fincher, 2008) in the machine, as I had no idea it would take so long to deal with its straightforward subject – just under three hours. Penny Marshall’s Big (1988) does its thang in 104 min., Dating the Enemy (MS Hubermann, 1996) its in 97. I could go on. Fincher did.

I watched the movie with his fascinating commentary (which he did alone, without a single 'um' or 'er') and the subtitles turned on. Risky casting, I thought, in the leads: Brad showing as much depth as a floppy disk, and Cate having to compress her enormous ability into single lines, body doubles and inches of makeup.
