England My England

England My England (Tony Palmer, 1995)

Written by John Osborne and Charles Wood: the life of the composer Henry Purcell, seen through the eyes of a playwright in the 1960s who is trying to write a play about him.

Simon Callow, Michael Ball, Rebecca Front, Lucy Speed, John Shrapnel ...

This film brings together several interests: the greatest English composer, the greatest English diarist, the stage, metafilm, some fine music from John Eliot Gardiner & The English Baroque Soloists, and excellent acting from Simon Callow and friends. It’s much more than 'The Life of Henry Purcell' – and less, tho HP only lived for 36 years. Highly recommended, for many reasons, and one of my favourites.
