Portrait of a Lady

Portrait of a Lady (Jane Campion, 1997) wr. Laura Jones, dp Stuart Dryburgh; Nicole Kidman, John Malkovich, Barbara Hershey, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Donovan, Shelly Winters, Richard E. Grant, Shelly Duvall, Christian Bale, Viggo Mortensen, Valentina Cervi, John Gielgud; An American girl inherits a fortune and falls into a misguided relationship with a gentleman confidence artist whose true nature, including a barbed and covetous disposition, turns her life into a nightmare.

I put off looking at Campion’s Portrait of a Lady tho I'd owned a copy for years. I had a feeling it would be all wrong, and it is. Kidman’s Isabel cries throughout, Malkovich is one-dimensionally malevolent … Campion has nfi. She shd’ve left it to Merchant Ivory and Ruth Prawer Jabhvala.
