Soft Skin

Soft Skin (François Truffaut, 1964) aka La peau douce; Jean Desailly, Françoise Dorléac, Nelly Benedetti

Pierre Lachenay is a well-known publisher and lecturer, married with Franca and father of Sabine, around 10. He meets an air hostess, Nicole.

This, for me, is pure cinema. The story could hardly be simpler. The b/w photography (by Raoul Coutard) and editing is straightforward, and perfect. There is one scene where the married couple are getting ready to go to bed in their apartment. Lights go on and off in a montage of everyday familiarity. So much there to take for granted; so much to lose.
