Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder (Ben Stiller, 2008) wr. Justin Theroux, Ben Stiller, Etan Cohen; Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr, Brandon T. Jackson, Steve Coogan, Nick Nolte, Tom Cruise; actors shooting a big-budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying

Despite my reservations about it: war, dispensable Asians, vulgarity, American humour, jokes about ppl with disabilities … I still this is an excellent film, because it has acting about as good as it gets, from: Robert Downey Jnr, Tom Cruise (!), Ben Stiller, and even Jack Black. My reason for watching it, by the way, was the particular variety of metafilm it exemplifies – in common with The Three Amigos and Galaxy Quest.

Fun fact: a character in the film is called Alpa Chino. (Al Pacino was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1973, 1991, 1993, and 2020, and for Best Actor in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, and won that award in 1993.)
