What's Up Doc?

What's Up Doc? (Peter Bogdanovich, 1972) Barbra Streisand, Ryan O'Neal, Madeline Kahn

Two researchers have come to San Francisco to compete for a research grant in Music. One seems a bit distracted, and that was before he meets a strange woman who seems to have devoted her life to confusing and embarassing him. At the same time a woman has her jewels stolen and a government whistle-blower arrives with his stolen top-secret papers. All, of course have the same style and colour overnight bag.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable comedy, possibly almost as much thanks to the production designer (Polly Platt) as the director (she was his wife). The first pace is maintained throughout. Ryan O'Neill looks less handsome than he is (partly because he's acting, partly because of his spectacles) and by the end of the film Barbra Streisand actually looks attractive! (because she's acting too).
