Blackfellas

Blackfellas (James Ricketson, 1993) wr. James Ricketson from novel Day of the Dog by Archie Weller; exec. prod. Paul D. Barron, Penny Chapman; prod. David Rapsey, music David Milroy, dp Jeffrey Malouf; John Moore (Doug), David Ngoombujarra (Floyd), Jaylene Riley (Polly), Ernie Dingo, Julie Hudspeth, John Hargreaves, Lisa Kinchela; AFI awards for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Ngoombujarra)

Mostly distinguished by the fine performance of David Ngoombujarra (1967-2011).

This time it is the white performers (Julie Hudspeth as Doug's mother and John Hargreaves as a belligerent detective) who appear stiff and unnatural. It may well be that, because black and white cultures are so far apart in Australia, it is not possible to make a film where black and white characters can comfortably inhabit the same cultural universe.
