Jan Epstein:
This time it is the white performers (Julie Hudspeth as Doug's mother and John Hargreaves as a belligerent detective) who appear stiff and unnatural. It may well be that, because black and white cultures are so far apart in Australia, it is not possible to make a film where black and white characters can comfortably inhabit the same cultural universe. Jan Epstein, Murray: 355.
